Life Extension® Products Provide a Healthy Way to a New You!

When you think of Skin Essentials you may feel that our services are confined to external body care like peels, facials, waxing and tinting. While each of those are among the many services we provide, your skin is a fingerprint to what’s going on inside your body, so it makes perfect sense to work from the inside out. If you provide your body with the essential nutritional building blocks it needs, your skin will thank you by looking more radiant, and your overall health will benefit as well.

My personal vitamin and mineral regime includes products I’ve come to know and trust that are created by a company called Life Extension®. For more than 33 years, Life Extension® has been a pioneer in funding and reporting the latest anti-aging research and integrative health therapies, in addition to offering superior-quality dietary supplements to the general public.

Life Extension® has a long history of offering health guidance to American consumers, in many cases years ahead of the mainstream medical establishment. Just a few examples include their recognition in 1983 that a daily low-dose aspirin had value in reducing vascular disease risk, years before the practice enjoyed widespread acceptance. They were the first company to offer Melatonin, a popular sleep aid, in 1992, and SAMe, a compound that may alleviate depression, arthritis, and certain liver disorders, in 1997.

So what do I do as a part of my daily health quest when it comes to vitamins and minerals? For starters, my personal regime includes the trace mineral Selenium which is believed to support normal thyroid and immune function.

I also make sure I take an iodine supplement. Iodine is a health-promoting trace element essential for life. Its primary biological role is in the production of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). In addition to thyroid function inadequate iodine intake may cause weight gain, low energy, depression, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and a variety of cancers. Iodine is vital to breast health in older women, with low intake correlated to increased risks for breast cancer and fibrocystic breast disease.

Life Extension’s Bio-Curcumin is another crucial part of my quest for health. Curcumin is an active compound derived from the Indian spice turmeric. It has been widely acclaimed for its diverse health-promoting effects on nearly every organ system in the body, which includes its support for the body’s natural inflammatory response system. Since recent evidence links chronic inflammation to a variety of diseases, I feel this is an important part of staying healthy.

The aging process and certain health issues can also cause a reduction in the body’s production of digestive enzymes. You may have noticed one effect of this reduction if you’ve ever experience a bloated feeling soon after eating a large meal. Digestive enzymes are essential to the body’s absorption and full use of food. The primary digestive enzymes are protease (to digest protein), amylase (to digest carbohydrates), and lipase (to digest fat). These enzymes function as biological catalysts to speed the reactions that break down food. Raw foods also provide enzymes that naturally break down food for proper absorption. The capacity of our bodies to make enzymes diminishes with age, so it is believed that supplementing with enzymes can help promote optimal digestion and better absorption of nutrients.

My body, just like yours, needs fatty acids to survive and is able to make all but two of them: linoleic acid (LA), found in the omega-6 family, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) a part of the omega-3 family. These two fatty acids must be supplied by the diet and are therefore considered what is known as essential fatty acids (EFAs).

Omega-3 fatty acids, which are commonly found in coldwater fish (and fish oil), perilla and flaxseed oils, are essential elements of a healthy diet. Omega-3 oils contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are usually lacking in the typical Western diet, which is filled with foods containing high amounts of omega-6 fats. EPA and DHA can be synthesized in the body from ALA, but EPA and DHA synthesis may be insufficient under certain conditions and for most people that consume Western diets. According to Life Extension their premium omegas are scientifically-validated fish oil concentrates, derived from sustainable sources, that contain a proprietary, full-spectrum blend of synergistic nutrients to provide scientifically validated cardioprotective health benefits.

I also make sure I’m taking a CoQ10 supplement. Coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance found throughout the body, but especially in the heart, liver, kidney, and pancreas. It is found in small amounts in meats and seafood. CoQ10 helps provide energy to cells, and also seems to have antioxidant activity. People with certain diseases, such as congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, periodontal disease, Parkinson’s disease, certain muscular diseases, and AIDS, are often found to have lower levels of CoQ10.

Life Extension’s Super Ubiquinol CoQ10 with Enhanced Mitochondrial Support™ is believed to provide a powerful synergy that supports more youthful cellular energy production than CoQ10 alone.

Another “must” for me is Melatonin. Melatonin is believed to keep our circadian cycle in tune. Not only does this hormone work to maintain cell health, it appears to regulate a system of self-repair and regeneration. As we age melatonin diminishes which can than impair our biological functions. Depending upon your preference, Life Extension® provides a choice between two types of Melatonin – a six our time release or a liquid variety.

I’m also in love with their Skin Restoring Phytoceramides with Lipowheat® which provides skin-nourishing oils to complement topical products you may already be using. Which brings me to my last little tidbit …

Okay, I’ve touched on just a few vital supplements to provide you with a broad overview of what you may need and why. I firmly believe that Life Extension® provides the best products currently available, which is why we carry them at Skin Essentials. Many commercially sold dietary supplements fail to deliver optimal results to the consumer, which is why I feel so committed to Life Extension®. My personal experience tells me they help keep my body healthy.

The next time you are here for one of our skincare services, be sure to ask about this great product line. I’ll be happy to talk to you in further detail about your specific needs. Obviously, before you embark on any new health regime, it’s important to check with your doctor or healthcare provider to make sure anything you are considering is appropriate for you.

Oh, and before I forget completely – Life Extension is not limited to just vitamin and mineral supplements. You may be interested in one of their products called Ultra Rejuvenex®.

Ultra Rejuvenex® is a youth-promoting face cream that contains green and white tea extracts, together with lots of other beneficial nutrients for the skin. Look at it this way – it’s a tea party for your skin!

I have lots of other exciting news to share with you in the coming months … so stay tuned!
