Unless you’ve been living under a rock (which, by the way, does not count as protection from the sun) you’ve heard how important it is to wear sunscreen for skin protection. Why, you ask? Because our skin works to protect us from harmful ultraviolet radiation, but it can’t do it alone. Even on cloudy days, our skin is susceptible to the sun’s rays which can lead to skin cancer, discoloration, and wrinkles over time.

If you wear a foundation containing sunscreen, you may think you are adequately protected from both the danger and damage caused by exposure to the sun. Guess what? You’re mistaken!

Although using makeup containing an SPF is a good idea, slathering on enough makeup to provide real protection is nearly impossible, and most cosmetics contain an SPF 15 or SPF 20, which is well below what dermatologists recommend. The remedy? A sunscreen “foundation” before you apply your actual makeup.

An important, and perhaps one of the biggest changes you can make in your daily routine to help protect your skin, is applying sunscreen each morning and again throughout the day. This should include not just sunscreen you apply to your body – but equally important – the protection you use on your face. Here are just a few of the reasons this routine is so important:

Reduces the Risk of Sunburn

Frequent sunburns can lead to damage that causes skin cancer, premature wrinkling, and many other skin issues.

Prevents the Signs of Aging

Excessive sun exposure, with little to no protection, causes damage to your elastin, collagen, and skin cells. Over time, this leads to premature signs of aging that include discoloration, wrinkles, fine lines, and even a leathery appearance. Premature aging, which is called photoaging, is common in those who spend time in the sun without sunscreen – especially in their 20s and 30s. Luckily, these skin issues can be prevented with daily sunscreen use.

Reduces Your Risk of Skin Cancer

Using sunscreen each day, even when it is cloudy, is one of the best ways to prevent skin cancer. Statistics show that by age 70, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer. You can lower your risk of developing this disease using a minimum of SPF 30 multiple times each day.

Prevents Skin Discoloration

As we age, skin that has not been protected from the sun often begins to discolor. These areas of skin discoloration are often referred to as “sun spots” or “liver spots”. They frequently show up on the face, head, hands, and arms. Applying sunscreen periodically throughout your day can help prevent these spots from appearing on your skin.

Reduces Inflammation

Exposure to UV rays can cause painful redness and inflammation. This can be especially challenging for individuals with skin issues like psoriasis or rosacea. Wearing sunscreen each day helps to prevent inflammation from harmful rays. If you are prone to redness and have sensitive skin, look for a sunscreen with gentle ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Choosing a sunscreen product can be overwhelming with all the different options available. One of the most important things to look for when choosing products is the level of SPF, keeping in mind an SPF of 30 or higher will ensure that your skin is fully protected, even on cloudy days. And remember to always reapply sunscreen after swimming or using a towel, and always choose a product with “broad spectrum” coverage.
